Our methodology is built entirely on transparency and astronomical precision. When you load the calculator, the tool determines your current date and geographic coordinates. Using the adhan.js library, it calculates the solar declination (the angle of the sun relative to the equator) and the equation of time (the difference between mean solar time and apparent solar time) for that specific day. These two variables are essential for placing the sun accurately in the sky relative to your location.
Once the solar position is mapped, the tool applies the specific calculation method designated for your region. For instance, it checks if the sun has reached the required depression angle below the horizon (such as 15 degrees for ISNA or 18 degrees for MWL) to mark the beginning of Fajr and Isha. For Zuhr, it calculates the exact moment the sun crosses your local meridian. For Asr, it uses the shadow length formula based on the Shafi or Hanafi convention you select. All these computations happen locally in your browser using standard JavaScript math functions, ensuring that the methodology is verifiable and the results are delivered with zero latency.

We support a variety of calculation methods to ensure that users worldwide have an experience that aligns with their local Islamic councils. We chose the Muslim World League (MWL) as our global default because it represents a widely accepted middle ground (18 degrees for Fajr, 17 degrees for Isha) used extensively across Europe and many other parts of the world. For North America, we use ISNA (15 degrees), as it is the standard adopted by the Islamic Society of North America, providing slightly later Fajr times suited for the continent. In Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, the Umm al-Qura method is mandated by the government, so we apply it automatically for that region. For South Asia, the University of Karachi method (18 degrees) is the standard recognized by national committees in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. We chose these specific methods based on regional consensus to minimize discrepancies between our calculator and local mosque timetables.
Since launching this tool, we have been committed to continuous refinement. In our early versions, we relied on a generic calculation method for all users, which led to minor discrepancies in regions with specific conventions. Based on user feedback, we implemented the automatic region-based method selection, dramatically improving accuracy for thousands of users. Your privacy is our top priority. All calculations happen directly in your browser using JavaScript. When you search for a city, your browser sends the search query directly to OpenStreetMap to look up coordinates. When you use GPS, your browser may send coordinates to Nominatim to identify your city name. If GPS is unavailable, your browser may contact an IP geolocation service. These requests go directly from your browser to those services. We never see, receive, or store your coordinates, city searches, IP address, or any personal information. Nothing leaves your device that isn't strictly required for the calculation.
How we verify calculations is fundamental to our utility. We adhere strictly to established scholarly standards and major calculation methods. Our engine uses the same astronomical algorithms used by major Islamic organisations worldwide. While we strive for absolute accuracy, we recognize that atmospheric conditions, altitude, and local conventions can affect actual prayer times. Therefore, we display raw calculated times without added safety minutes (ihtiyat), allowing you to compare directly with your local mosque or adjust as needed.
